At Evolve Outreach, we know that solving homelessness takes more than good intentions—it takes practical, flexible solutions that meet people where they are. One of the most promising innovations we're embracing is the use of tiny homes and tiny home communities as a stepping stone toward permanent housing. These small, simple dwellings offer something powerful: stability, dignity, and the space to begin again.
What Are Tiny Homes?
Tiny homes are compact, often single-room dwellings that provide basic shelter, safety, and comfort. Typically ranging from 100 to 400 square feet, they may include a sleeping area, small kitchenette, bathroom, and seating space. More importantly, they offer a front door that locks and a place to call one’s own.
Tiny home communities bring these dwellings together into a shared space, often with communal areas, supportive services, and case management available on-site. Each village becomes a neighborhood of possibility for individuals moving from crisis to stability.
Why Tiny Homes Work
Tiny homes are not just a trend—they're a bridge. For people who are experiencing short term homelessness, have experienced long-term homelessness or face barriers to traditional housing, tiny homes create a crucial middle step between shelters or hotels, and permanent apartments.
They offer:
Privacy and security - A safe space that is their own, free from the chaos of shared shelters
Stability without pressure - Clients can settle in and access services without the immediate stress of paying rent or meeting rigid tenancy requirements
A foundation for healing - With consistent access to caseworkers, healthcare, and peer support, residents can address mental health, addiction, or trauma in a calmer environment
Life skill development - Residents learn or relearn cooking, budgeting, cleaning, and time management in a home-like setting, building habits for long-term independence
Community belonging - Villages foster connection, mutual support, and shared responsibility—elements often lost in traditional housing systems
Our Tiny Home Vision
At Evolve Outreach, we support the development of tiny home solutions as a practical part of our wraparound services. While tiny homes aren't a final destination, they are a powerful stepping stone.
We will work with local partners to:
Design and maintain compassionate, low-barrier communities
Offer on-site case management and access to wraparound services
Prioritize safety, dignity, and empowerment in every interaction
Connect tiny home residents to job training, healthcare, and long-term housing resources
We will also ensure that transportation is never a barrier by providing free bus passes and scheduled rides for all clients living in tiny home communities. As a part of helping individuals transition responsibly and prepare for long-term independence, modest rents may be charged to help residents build budgeting habits and contribute toward the sustainability of the community.
What Tiny Homes Are Not
Tiny homes are not meant to replace permanent housing. They are not a quick fix. Instead, they offer a right-sized solution for the right moment in someone’s journey. When paired with thoughtful programming and community support, they create momentum.
Much like our use of SWOT analysis and wraparound services, tiny homes are one of many tools we use to walk beside people as they move forward—not just out of homelessness, but into a better condition of life.
For Funders: Small Investment, Lasting Change
Tiny home communities offer a high-impact return on investment. With lower upfront costs than traditional housing, they deliver:
Faster shelter for more individuals
Lower rates of return to homelessness
Stronger engagement in supportive services
Your support allows us to create real homes for real people, while continuing to connect them with the full spectrum of care they need.
For Volunteers: Community Starts with You
Tiny home villages thrive on community, and volunteers are essential to making them feel like home. From landscaping and community meals to mentoring and skill-sharing, your presence adds warmth to every tiny house. You’re not just helping build shelter—you’re helping rebuild lives.
For Partners: Let’s Build Something Meaningful
We welcome collaboration with developers, city planners, nonprofits, and healthcare providers to bring more tiny home communities to life. Together, we can create affordable, adaptable, human-centered spaces that restore hope and provide a path forward.
A tiny home may be small in size, but it holds enormous potential. When someone has a roof over their head, a door they can close, and a place to breathe, the healing begins. At Evolve Outreach, we believe that every person deserves that opportunity.
Together, we can turn small spaces into new beginnings, and move more people toward the stability, dignity, and purpose that define a better condition of life.
